Machinists & plant operators, packaging technologists, warehouse logistics professionals, print media technologists … not to mention packaging professionals, of course … Fancy job titles, but what exactly do they all do? Will I be stuck in the same job for the next forty years?! Or can I gain additional qualifications and develop my career? How much will I earn? These questions are often asked by young school leavers as they look for a vocational training placement – but they’re also often asked by the parents, adult friends and teachers who provide career advice and support.

When it comes to careers in packaging, DEBATIN can tell you all you need to know about the many different professions in this important industry. We regularly attend local careers fairs where we showcase various career opportunities. Our well-designed and excellently structured vocational training programmes are another point in our favour. The latest addition, however, has come from the DFTA (German Flexographic Technical Association), which recently launched a brand new vocational training pilot project.

What do DEBATIN packaging professionals do all day? – Meet us to find out more 🙂

In many cases, the career path you choose when you leave school determines the course of your whole working life. So, naturally, young people want to know what to expect, and what will be expected of them. The challenge is to find a career that “fits” your personality, is fun, and offers development opportunities. If you also get good colleagues, a good work environment and good pay, then you’ve struck gold!

We firmly believe that strong vocational training lays a solid foundation for a successful career and a good future. To this end, we invest in our vocational training and in helping our apprentices achieve their full potential. In our company, apprentices enjoy vocational training programmes that are designed and structured with great thought and care. What’s more, they get to work with a great team – our DEBATEAM! Our apprentices learn their trade from A to Z. That’s because here at DEBATIN, we believe thorough training is just as important as commitment, decent and fair pay, company health management and mutual respect.

My group of young people who are looking for or want to do an apprenticeship

Sounds good in theory – but nothing beats meeting us in person! Why not apply for an internship, or meet us at one of our career fair stands? Last April, for example, we attended the careers fair in Bretten (“Brettener Ausbildungstag”) and the careers marketplace in Ubstadt-Weiher . Both of these careers fairs were well attended and led to lots of interesting conversations with young people who wanted to know more about us and the different vocational training opportunities we offer. We were also delighted that so many of the young people expressed interest in the internships DEBATIN offers!

By the way – following an extensive audit by the DFTA, DEBATIN was recently rated a Top Vocational Training Provider !

DFTA Insights – The DFTA Vocational Training roadshow

The DFTA recently introduced an exciting new information format entitled “DFTA Insights” to cast a spotlight behind the scenes of the different professions people can pursue in the field of packaging and flexographic printing.

The aim of this DFTA project is to provide young people (i.e., the next generation of apprentices!) with a better overview of the different professions within our industry. The project also provides information about different career development opportunities as this can help people make informed choices.

However, rather than targeting the future apprentices directly, DFTA Insights takes a different approach. It’s aimed specifically at the adults who support and advise school leavers in their career choices – careers advisers and teachers, in other words.

DFTA Insights enables them to find out more about the individual vocational training courses in person and on site, in the companies that offer them. Here they also receive background information and are given opportunities to watch the current apprentices at work and chat to them about their experiences.

We think this is a great idea. It’s an important and future-oriented step that will help counteract the shortage of skilled workers in Germany. At the same time, it creates awareness for lesser-known vocational training courses and will hopefully inspire young people to enrol on them.

Last spring, we were delighted to host one of these roadshows for career advisers and teachers at our site in Bruchsal. Organised by Shireen Staib, who is the DFTA’s project manager and vocational training officer, the event gave participants opportunities to form their own impression of what it means to embark on a print media technologist or packaging technologist apprenticeship. They were also given a taste of just how colourful and modern these professions are, and the important roles that printing and packaging play in our daily lives. Feedback after the event was resoundingly positive, with many of the participants reporting that they’d never realised just how multi-faceted and interesting the showcased professions can be.

DEBATIN’s CEO Thomas Rose is equally enthusiastic about the new scheme. “The roadshow is the perfect complementary format to support careers advisers as they help young people find interesting, exciting, future-proof and attractive vocational training courses,” he summarises.
