With bicycle messengers. We’re all accustomed to having bike couriers deliver our pizzas and our sushi. But now, if you venture onto the streets of Paris, you might just encounter one carrying a very different load for one of our laboratory customers. Taking the saying “shoulder to the wheel” to a whole new level, bike couriers are now transporting lab samples from A to B. Faster, cheaper, better and greener.
Delivering lab samples via bicycle messengers
“Europe has developed clear guidelines for transporting biological samples,” explains Christophe Jansem, Head of Sales and Marketing for DEBATIN’s French subsidiary L.E.S.S. France. This is where Packaging Instruction P650 for hazardous goods comes into play. “The regulations apply to transportation via public roads, which means they also apply to couriers who use bicycles or scooters,” Jansem adds. Only recently have more and more companies begun to discover just how attractive this solution is – not only are bicycles a greener option, but in dense inner city traffic, they’re also much faster.

“When you transport biological samples or lab samples, you not only need a primary receptacle and secondary packaging, but also rigid outer packaging. That’s especially challenging, of course, if you’re transporting the samples via bicycle courier,” explains Christophe Jansem. To solve the problem, the DEBAMED® experts in France developed a product to complement the LaBOX that’s used when transporting samples by car. In this case, it’s a rucksack that meets the P650 requirements for “rigid outer packaging”.
A rucksack as rigid outer packaging

The rucksack is now a fixture in the DEBAMED® product portfolio. It can be used to transport samples that fall into the UN3373 dangerous goods category. When used in combination with eutectic plates, the rucksack can keep samples at a constant temperature for up to six hours during transport.
